Why Yoga?

LIVE YOUR WHY? WHY YOGA?

Join Laura & the 90 Degrees North Teacher Trainees Sunday morning as we explore Why Yoga?

Deep dive into meditation, inquiry, and asana ans we discuss why yoga is different than a hour spin at the gym, or a weight session at your local box.  Why Yoga? will answer your questions as to how yoga can fit into those spin and lift sessions and how a balanced life of both will serve you well into your future.

Come with questions, a journal, a pen and an open mind.

Street Yoga - Trauma Informed Yoga Training

Join 90 Degrees and lululemon athletica as we present Street Yoga, a Trauma Informed Yoga training taking place the weekend of March 10, 2017 in Flint, Michigan.

This weekend training is Street Yoga's core curriculum. It offers an inspiring and heart-felt introduction to the field of yoga service for youth experiencing life challenges. The densely-packed 16-hour training focuses on a wide-variety of practical, hands-on skills needed to serve youth with yoga and meditation in the real world. Areas for exploration and practice include communicating effectively, maintaining safety in the classroom, promoting healthy boundaries, choosing postures and exercises, handling challenging behaviors and situations, and collaborating with agencies.

A word from Street Yoga's Founder and our lead trainer, Mark Lilly:

“One of the things we do is work on getting ourselves to see yoga... not as 90 minutes on the mat in a studio, but so much more: it could be five minutes in a hallway with one kid, helping her breathe and calm down before she meets a probation officer. It could be working with staff to help them ground and center in their own breathing.

There are so many ways we use yoga in our own lives without realizing it, and a big part of the training is to help you tease out all those glories and find ways to share them with others.”

TENTATIVE CLASS SCHEDULE:
Friday 3/10 | 5:30-9:30PM
Saturday 3/11 | 10:00-4:00PM
Sunday 3/12 | 10:00-4:00PM

COST: Early bird $300 (until February 12th) • Regular $335
($100 Non-Refundable Registration Fee included)

Applicants are not required to have completed a 200 yoga teacher-training program. However, because our training helps trainees understand how to use and adapt what they already know for the purposes of yoga service, all applicants should have experience with yoga and/or meditation. These hours may include any combination of personal practice, studio classes, and/or individual instruction. We suggest a minimum of 20 hours of yoga before applying.

In order to fulfill our mission to share yoga, we also award 4-5 partial scholarships per training, depending upon the total registration and community support from our sponsors: http://streetyoga.org/programs-3/trainings/financial-assistance/

50% of December class package sale proceeds will benefit The Empowerment Plan.

The Empowerment Plan is a Detroit based nonprofit organization focused on permanently elevating families from the generational cycle of homelessness. We hire single parents from local shelters and provide them with training and full-time employment as seamstresses so that they can earn a stable income, find secure housing, and regain their independence. The individuals we hire manufacture a coat designed to meet the needs of those in the homeless community. The durable EMPWR Coat can transform into a sleeping bag at night or an over- the-shoulder bag when not in use. Since 2012, we have provided employment to 34 homeless individuals—all of whom have now secured permanent housing for themselves and their families —and distributed over 15,000 coats to those in need across the U.S. and Canada.

Vista Maria Dolly Drive - LOCAL ROAD TRIP

Have you ever wanted to learn more about how you can support at-risk young women? Let's all learn more at Vista Maria Dolly Drive event!

If you are interested please let us know at the studio and we can coordinate driving arrangements. Advance tickets are $25 and $30 at the door. Purchase them yourself ahead of time online.

Vista Maria’s Downriver Dolly Drive raises important funding and support for girls who are placed in foster care and human trafficking treatment. These children are no different than our own.  They need supportive adults who will love, nurture and protect them, as well as provide them with the opportunity to “just be a kid.” Girls come into the foster care system when their family is in crisis and their safety is in jeopardy.  Perpetrators prey on the weak including teens that have dropped out of school, are in the foster care system or have run away from home.   This means that approximately 12,000 Michigan children are at risk for becoming human trafficking victims at any given time from the foster care system alone. It is estimated that there are over 199,000 children in the United States enslaved to perform sexual acts.  Vista Maria remains deeply committed to and invested in advocacy for ending human trafficking, and providing essential treatment with a continuum of services for abused, neglected and traumatized girls ages 11 to 18. You can help give girls the precious gift of a loving home and the opportunity to create positive, lasting memories that are an essential component of their healing and recovery.
